someone mentioned april fools today, and it reminded me that last year a couple of radio DJs got taken off the air and almost faced felony charges because they told their audience that the local water supply was contaminated with “Dihydrogen Monoxide” and alot of people panicked
Junketsu has been literally perverted by Ragyo and Nui. One standing for “purity” and to be Satsuki’s fighting kamui, Junketsu was re-stitched by Nui Harime with her and Ragyo’s combined sexual experiences and with all the pleasures they have experienced in the world while Ryuko and Satsuki have suffered lives of pain (one against her will and one by the sheer might of her own will) and abstinence from any worldly pleasures. Ryuko was overwhelmed by those pleasures when she had the new junketsu stitched onto her body. All of that imagery was symbolic of the overwhelming pleasure of wearing Junketsu and that was a pleasure Ryuko had never come close to feeling save for the moment she reached 100% synchro rate with Senketsu back in her fight against Nui during the Grand Culture festival.
Remember that Ryuko is a 17 year old girl who has had no exposure to pleasure. She has grown up as an honest to goodness badass fighting from dusk until dawn every day. She took on 5 guys at once once. And they never even gave her a nickname till she got her sword. She was ripe for the picking and hypersensitive to that kind of manipulation because of what she desires.
Satsuki on the other hand knows the finest pleasures life can offer: fine tea, the triumphs of leadership and accomplishment, the joys of witnessing your charges grow, perform, and mature, and the grim satisfaction of a hard body sharpened by years of training. She spent years honing her body in hardship and that is the only reason she can wear either Kamui, especially Junketsu. These are two very different girls with very different experiences but both equally hard. One living in mystery and wandering, getting into trouble as an outcast and fighting as a delinquent. One living a life of complete luxury but abandoning it to hone her body to perfection as a weapon and dedicating her life to a single goal and raising those around her to those heights, seeking talent and helping it blossom into the Elite 4.
And that shows a contrast too. There has been a lot of outright sexual content since Ragyo showed up on the scene and it has been very purposeful in showing the development of Satsuki and Ryuko as characters.
I have to go ahead and say that if you don’t like how the artists have decided to portray what they are portraying than you can just go ahead and not watch. I don’t think any of the cheesecake is holding kill la kill back since most of it is done comedy wise anyway. To honestly believe that Ryuko’s “fanservice” in the first few episodes was supposed to be for anything other than a comedy purpose and some absolute over the top subversive stuff (and a chance to put some ridiculous motion and pose studies on TV) is foolishness to me. I don’t see anything problematic in kill la kill.
